[ARCHIVED] Statement From the Office of the Chief of Police

Peoria,

Like many across our nation, I am heartbroken by the tragic shooting that took place today in Minneapolis, where innocent children were attacked during a school Mass. Our thoughts and prayers are with those families, that community, and the first responders who faced the unimaginable.

But moments like this are also a wake-up call. Safety is not guaranteed; it is built by us, together. That is why we have called you to Stand Up. Show Up. Be There. Because one shooting, whether here or across the country, is one too many.

This is more than words; it is a rallying cry:

• Stand up as role models and protectors of our children.
• Show up in our schools, neighborhoods, and safe passages.
• Be there before violence happens, so every child knows they are seen, supported, and safe.

Your police department will continue to focus on prevention, rapid response, and building trust. But we cannot do this alone. Families, schools, faith leaders, and neighbors, all of us, must rise together if we want a safer city.

So today, I am calling on every man and woman in Peoria: this is your moment. Volunteer at your child’s school. Mentor a young person. Report warning signs before they escalate.

Let’s make Peoria a city where children walk freely, learn safely, and dream boldly.

And let me be clear to those who would try to bring violence to our city: we are united, we are watching, and we will not allow you to harm our children or our neighborhoods. You will be stopped, and you will be held accountable.

Our prayers are with Minneapolis. Our responsibility is here at home. Together, as one city, one voice, one community, let us Stand Up. Show Up. Be There.

Eric Echevarria
