[ARCHIVED] City of Peoria to Join Habitat for Humanity to Celebrate New Homes on Friday, October 17th

PEORIA, IL (October 16, 2025) The city of Peoria will join Habitat for Humanity of Greater Peoria for a wall raising ceremony on Friday, October 17th at 5:00 p.m. at 1201 W. Adrian G. Hinton Avenue in Peoria. Six affordable single-family homes will be built on the site of the former McKinley School location.

This community event will mark the beginning of construction.   This ceremony is a major milestone towards homeownership for the future homeowners.

This project is the result of years of advocacy by elected officials and staff at the federal, state, and local level. In 2022, the Peoria City Council approved $943,700 in American Rescue Plan dollars to demolish the former McKinley School. In 2024, U.S. Congressman Eric Sorensen secured $500,000 from a Community Project Funding grant for the construction of new, quality affordable housing.

City staff continues to work with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Peoria to develop new, quality, and safe housing in Peoria’s neighborhoods, including providing nineteen parcels to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Peoria along West Adrian G. Hinton Avenue for future development. These lots will create fourteen single-family homes.
