Ahead of today’s expected snowfall, the City of Peoria Department of Public Works is reminding commercial property owners of their responsibility to keep public sidewalks safe and accessible.
Per City Ordinance, all commercial property owners, including businesses, schools, churches, and hospitals, are required to remove snow from public sidewalks adjacent to their properties. To remain in compliance with City Code, commercial property owners are required to:
• Clear a 4-foot-wide path within 24 hours after less than six inches of snow has stopped falling.
• Clear a 4-foot-wide path within 36 hours after more than six inches of snow has stopped falling.
Snow must not be pushed or piled into the street or placed in a way that blocks fire hydrants or mailboxes.
Public Works would also like to encourage residents to be good neighbors and remove snow from public sidewalks around their homes. Keeping sidewalks accessible ensures safer travel for all.
