The Department of Public Works is closely monitoring a significant winter storm system expected to impact the area beginning late Saturday afternoon and evening, Jan. 24, and continuing through much of the day on Sunday, Jan. 25.
While Peoria is not expected to receive the higher snowfall totals forecasted for Southern Illinois, current projections indicate snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. Combined with near-zero temperatures, below-zero wind chills, gusty winds, and periods of snowfall, travel conditions may become hazardous at times throughout the weekend.
Public Works crews will begin around-the-clock operations tomorrow at 7 p.m. and will work 12-hour shifts until further notice. Motorists should anticipate slick and snow-covered roads as snowfall occurs intermittently, particularly overnight from Saturday into Sunday. Road condition updates will be shared as needed.
Due to the anticipated extreme cold and changing road conditions, Public Works strongly encourages residents to stay home and limit exposure whenever possible this weekend. If travel is unavoidable, drivers are urged to remain alert, slow down, and allow extra time to reach their destinations safely.
As a reminder, residential plowing will occur after at least 2 inches of snow have accumulated, once arterial streets have been cleared, and snowfall has ended.
Public Works urges residents to use caution, stay informed, and prioritize safety throughout this winter storm.
