[ARCHIVED] Public Works Flood Preparation Update

Public Works Logo

The Department of Public Works continues to monitor the Illinois River. As of today, Wednesday, January 31, forecasted crest levels remain at 22 feet. The river is expected to crest tomorrow afternoon and into the morning of Friday, February 2.

Department staff will continue to monitor river levels. At 22.7 feet, flooding begins in low-lying areas in Riverfront Park. Sandbagging efforts will begin if forecasted crest levels increase.

Equipment is ready and plans are in place should forecasted crest levels rise. The Department does not anticipate any impacts to businesses along the riverfront or Water Street. Parking lot and sidewalk closures along the riverfront may occur tomorrow and Friday.

River levels may continue to fluctuate due to ice jams and melt rates in the northern portions of the Illinois River. If crest levels rise again, Public Works will take action as needed.
