The Peoria Police Department would like to clarify the circumstances surrounding its limited communication regarding the recent officer-involved incident.
On the evening of August 6, 2025, the Illinois State Police (ISP) advised the Peoria Police Department of a newly implemented protocol governing investigations. Under this new policy, agencies requesting ISP involvement must sign an official form that explicitly states ISP will take the lead on all public and media communication related to the investigation. This was the first time the new ISP protocol had been presented to the Peoria Police Department.
Based on the new ISP protocol, the Peoria Police Department was unable to release any information without ISP approval. ISP’s approval to release limited information was given at 10:19 p.m. The statement was then promptly released.
Today we requested permission from ISP to release the names of the officers who have been placed on critical incident leave. ISP granted that permission and we can confirm that Ofc. Veronica Orozco and Ofc. Da’Monte Williams are currently on critical incident leave as a result of this incident.
At this time, due to the ISP protocol we cannot provide any further information. As the investigation proceeds, we will release information if and when it’s authorized by ISP.
