(PEORIA, IL) On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at approximately 6:04 a.m., Peoria Police responded to the 1200 block of N. Sheridan Road regarding a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with a 36-year-old male victim who reported he was walking northbound on N. Sheridan Road when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene before police arrived.
The victim was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, no suspect or vehicle information is available. The incident remains under investigation.
UPDATE 2/2/2026
During the course of the investigation, Peoria Police detectives identified 39-year-old Nicholas L. Smith as the suspect in this case.
On January 31, 2026, at approximately 12:39 a.m., detectives located Smith at a residence in the 1000 block of N. Garfield. A vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the pedestrian crash was also located at the residence.
Smith was taken into custody without incident and arrested for Failure to Render Aid in an Accident, Accident Involving Injury or Death, and Failure to Reduce Speed. He was transported to the Peoria County Jail.
