[ARCHIVED] 4/20/23 Chief Eric Echevarria Provides Update to Community Regarding Anti-Violence Initiative 2023

(Peoria, IL) – Wednesday, April 19, 2023, local law enforcement officers conducted another Directed Patrol Detail. This detail included members of the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division (SID), Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Neighborhood Services Unit (NSU), Illinois State Police (Troop 4) Zone 4 DCI and ISP Air Operations. There was a total of 21-plus law enforcement officers participating in this detail.
In keeping with departmental transparency, the following summarizes the results of yesterday’s efforts:
Approximately 37 vehicle stops were conducted, resulting in several citations and numerous warnings. Eleven arrests were made, 2 weapons were seized, and one stolen vehicle was recovered. Seventeen tickets were issued, and three vehicles were impounded. Below is a brief synopsis of major incidents during the detail.
• Ellis/Archer: at approximately 5:45 p.m. members of the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division (SID) observed a male juvenile with an active warrant (#23-6130) at the above location. Officers approached the 17-year-old and placed him into custody without incident. During a search officers located a loaded handgun and ammunition on the subject’s person. 
The juvenile was transported to the Peoria Police Department for interviewing purposes and subsequently arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Handgun Under 21 and the active warrant. The juvenile was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. PPD Incident #23-6793.
• 2400 N. Sheridan: at approximately 9:00 p.m. members of the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division (SID) attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of McClure and Ellis. The vehicle fled from the stop and came to a stop at the above location. The 17-year-old male driver attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended and detained. He was transported to the Peoria Police Department for interviewing purposes and subsequently arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Handgun Under 21 and Traffic Offenses. The juvenile was transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. PPD Incident #23-6802.
• 3445 Fallen Oak: at approximately 10:11 a.m. Detail officers conducting patrol in the area of Lexington Hills located a reported stolen vehicle unoccupied at the above location. Members of the Peoria Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit (CSU) responded to the area and initiated an investigation. There is no suspect information. This incident is under investigation. PPD Incident #23-6631.
(SID) - In addition to this detail, SID officers conducted covert operations associated with ongoing investigations involving known violent offenders.
(CID) -Detectives conducted follow ups involving active violent cases.

“Yesterday’s Directed Patrol resulted in the arrest of 11 people who broke the law. These Directed Patrols are about keeping those committing crimes off the streets of Peoria. Our officers are committed to arresting those who break the law, in order to give our community members a safer city to live in."
