[ARCHIVED] City Reminds Property Owners to Maintain Their Yards This Spring and Summer

The City of Peoria Community Development Department is encouraging property owners to maintain their yards this spring and summer. Code enforcement inspectors are writing warning notices and tickets to landlords, homeowners, and commercial property owners for grass and weeds taller than ten inches. Tall grass and weeds lower property values and encourage insect and rodent infestations.

Warning Notices and Tickets
Warning notices are posted to occupied homes and businesses. These notices give property owners six days to mow the grass and remove any tall weeds. Vacant lots, vacant homes, and vacant commercial properties are not given warning notices.

Code enforcement inspectors write tickets to property owners at their discretion. When writing tickets for tall grass and weeds, code enforcement inspectors consider the severity of the violation and how frequently they visit the property.

Work Orders
Grass that is not mowed within six days of receiving a warning notice will be mowed by a city contractor. The City bills the property owner for the cost of paying a contractor to mow their property plus a $125 administrative fee.

Avoid Tickets and Work Order Fees

  • Make a plan to mow at least once a week throughout the spring and summer months.
  • Sign up online to receive texts and email notifications when code enforcement visits your property.
