[ARCHIVED] 6/9/23 Chief Eric Echevarria Provides Update to Community Regarding Anti-Violence Initiative 2023

(Peoria, IL) – Thursday, June 9, 2023, local law enforcement officers conducted another Directed Patrol Detail. This detail included members of the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division (SID), Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Crime Scene Unit (CSU) and Neighborhood Services Unit (NSU). There was a total of 22 law enforcement officers participating in this detail.
In keeping with departmental transparency, the following summarizes the results of yesterday’s efforts:
Approximately 42 vehicle stops were conducted, resulting in several citations and numerous warnings. 13 arrests were made, and 2 weapons (one stolen) were seized. 
Fifteen tickets were issued, and three vehicles were impounded. Below is a brief synopsis of major incidents during the detail.
• 2400 N. Elmwood: At approximately 6:45 p.m. members of the Peoria Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit (SCU) conducted a traffic stop at the above location for a vehicle violation. When the vehicle came to a complete stop the rear passenger immediately exited and fled on foot while holding a handgun. The 17-year-old suspect refused to comply with officers’ orders to drop the handgun and stop. After a brief foot chase officers apprehended the juvenile in the 2400 block of N. Gale. Officers located a loaded firearm and a second magazine a few feet away from where the suspect was taken into custody. The vehicle fled the stop and was not located. The juvenile was transported to the Peoria Police Department for interviewing purposes and subsequently arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Possession of a Handgun without a FOID Card, Possession of a Handgun Under 21, Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Police. He was transported to the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center. This investigation is ongoing. PPD Incident 23-10468
(SID) – SID officers also conducted covert operations to locate known violent offenders driving violence.
(CID) - Detectives conducted follow ups involving active violent cases.
Message from Chief Echevarria:
“This is another example of how successful our Directed Patrols are. As a result of last night’s efforts, two illegal handguns were seized. Ridding our streets of illegal guns and violent offenders is the goal of this department and my continued promise to you.
