The Department of Public Works continues to monitor the Illinois River. As of today, Tuesday, January 30, forecasted crest levels have fallen from 22.5 feet to 22 feet. The river is expected to crest overnight on Thursday, February 1, and into the morning of Friday, February 2.
Department staff will continue to monitor river levels and conditions throughout the week. At 22.7 feet, flooding begins in low-lying areas in Riverfront Park. Sandbagging efforts will begin if forecasted crest levels increase.
Crews are currently readying equipment and planning for the next course of action should forecasted crest levels rise. The Department does not anticipate any impacts to businesses along the riverfront or Water Street. Parking lot and sidewalk closures along the riverfront may occur in the coming days.
River levels may continue to fluctuate due to ice jams and melt rates in the northern portions of the Illinois River. If crest levels rise again, Public Works will take action as needed.
