[ARCHIVED] 3/29/24 Chief Eric Echevarria Provides Update to Community Regarding Anti-Violence Initiative 2024

(Peoria, IL) – On Thursday, March 28, 2024, local law enforcement officers conducted another Directed Patrol Detail. This detail included members of the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division (SID), Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigations Division (CID), Neighborhood Services Unit (NSU), Illinois State Police (Troop 4), Illinois State Police Air Operations, and Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations (Zone 4). There was a total of 60-plus law enforcement officers participating in this detail.
In keeping with departmental transparency, the following summarizes the results of yesterday’s efforts:
Approximately 52 vehicle stops were conducted, resulting in several citations and numerous warnings. 16 arrests were made, 2 weapons were seized, and illegal drugs were seized. 29 tickets were issued, 3 stolen vehicles were recovered, and 5 vehicles were impounded. Below is a brief synopsis of major incidents during the detail.
• 1100 block of W. Main: At approximately 4:34 p.m. Members of the Peoria Police Department’s Special Investigations Division (SID) and detail officers, with the assistance of a License Plate Reader (LPR), located a vehicle connected to a subject wanted for a shooting in another jurisdiction. Officers observed the vehicle come to a stop at a business in the 1000 block of W. Main. 
Officers made contact with the occupants of the vehicle. One of the passengers, identified as 26-year-old Jerail M. Gilliam, attempted to flee in the vehicle but was immediately detained by officers. Another passenger inside the vehicle, identified as 23-year-old William J. Tuson, was also detained. During a search 
of the vehicle officers located two loaded firearms. Tuson was arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Armed Violence, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver Cannabis, Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine, and Possession 
of Methamphetamine. Gilliam was arrested for Possession of a Weapon by a Felon, Armed violence, No FOID, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Aggravated Assault Peace Officer, Obstructing Justice, Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Cannabis, and Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver Cannabis. Both men were transported to the Peoria County Jail. Incident #24-6006
• 100 block of W. Richmond: Peoria Police with the assistance of a License Plate Reader (LPR) located a stolen vehicle at University and Thrush. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped away at a high rate of speed. During the course of the investigation, officers located the vehicle abandoned in the 100 block of W. Richmond. During a search of the area officers apprehended an 
adult male matching the description of the suspect in the area. The suspect identified as 30-year-old Frederick T. Pates was arrested for Unlawful Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle and Fleeing/Eluding Police. He was transported to the Peoria County Jail. Incident #24-5985.
• Additional Information: There were 2 Shot Spotter alerts during the detail.
(SID) In addition to this detail, SID officers conducted covert operations associated with ongoing investigations involving known violent offenders.
(CID) - Detectives conducted follow-ups involving active violent cases.
