Occupation: Zakiya Floyd wears two very different hats. As site coordinator for the Ready, Set Go Program at Annie Jo Gordon Community Learning Center, she oversees and organizes child and family activities designed to improve and enrich academic outcomes, social-emotional learning and family stability. She is also a chef who owns and operates The Mothering Skillet, which offers personal chef and small catering services.
Community Involvement: Ms Floyd is chairwoman of the events committee of the Elizabeth Lindsay Davis chapter of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs. She is also a member of the Safety Network, the Peoria City/County Joint Committee on Racial Justice and Equity and its subcommittee on child and youth development.
Education: Associate of arts, business, Heartland Community College
Three things she’s passionate about: Mental health, motherhood/women’s health, and cooking
Three favorite hobbies: Cooking, traveling and music
Career influence and inspiration: “The children I work with truly inspire me. A lot of my students are faced with the unthinkable and yet they still show up to school to learn and to grow. I learn so much from my students. I love them and they keep me wanting to show up daily for them.”
Additionally, her supervisor, Brandy Bryant, has set an example by her work ethic, relationship-building and motherhood.
