Fire Department
From buckets, to horse drawn hose reels, to the current fleet of 12 fire engines, 4 aerial trucks, and 1 rescue squad, the Peoria Fire Department continually grows and advances as time goes on.
Organized in 1875, the Peoria Fire Department is the oldest downstate department in Illinois. Starting with 80 members, mostly volunteers, to our current operations of over 180 commissioned suppression personnel, the Peoria Fire Department is committed to serving its community to the fullest. With 12 fire stations throughout the city, the highly trained professionals are responsible for fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical service, hazardous material mitigation, fire prevention education, fire/arson investigation, fire code inspections, and community relations. We implement our services through four divisions:
- Fire Administration
- Fire Operations
- Fire Training
- Fire Prevention
The Peoria Fire Department adopts the mission statement of protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Peoria. We meet this commitment daily by providing comprehensive services.
We are very active in our community and believe in our slogan: Neighbors Helping Neighbors.

- What fire codes do the Peoria Fire Department Utilize?
-
The Peoria Fire Department utilizes the 2012 International Fire Code and 2015 National Fire Prevention Association's (NFPA 101) 2015 Life Safety Code (LSC). Note: the NFPA 101 2015 LSC (State Code) is mandated by the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM). In the utilization of these identified codes; the most stringent shall be used when applicable.
The OSFM-adopted LSC is applicable statewide in all occupancy classifications with the exception of public elementary and secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Illinois State Board of Education and single- two-family dwellings, where the code is adopted as a recommendation only.
The LSC requires compliance in both new and existing occupancies. While certain LSC requirements pertaining to existing occupancies are less stringent than those applicable to new occupancies, the State Code does not exempt or grandfather any existing occupancies from code compliance.
